What Is A Doula?

Short answer: a doula is a trained, non-medical support person who's got your back through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. We're not midwives, we're not nurses, we're not your mother-in-law — we're the steady, knowledgeable presence in your corner whose only job is you.

Doulas are skilled listeners, advocates who honor each family's unique journey. They contribute to a holistic and fulfilling birthing experience, remembered not just for its challenges, but for its beauty and empowerment. Through compassionate guidance, doulas help create a birthing environment that aligns with the family's values and desires, fostering calm and empowerment amidst life's profound moments.

Once the baby arrives, a postpartum doula offers invaluable support to the new family. Attuned to the family's emotional well-being, their role extends beyond basic infant care. They provide emotional and physical assistance, guiding parents on newborn care — feeding, diapering, bathing, soothing techniques — to build confidence in their new roles. They offer practical support, like meal preparation, light housekeeping, and caring for other children, allowing parents to rest and recover. This hands-on support not only boosts parental confidence but also nurtures bonding with the newborn.
